I am about to buy my first porsche!  woohoo!!!  I really want a 911 turbo for myself, but the wife wants the cayenne turbo. We have no kids at the time but she thinks the SUV will become more practical in the long run. I would defiently use the cayenne for more frequent use over the 911. I am torn though, cause part of me wants the cayenne but the younger side of me wants the 911 turbo (6 spd). PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!  GIVE ME PROS AND CONS OF BOTH.....I would greatly appreciate it!!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Pros & cons of the 911 turbo/Cayenne turbo?

Well, it depends what you want to use the car for, but if I had the choice, it'd be the 911 turbo everytime!

The only real lifestyle problem with the 911 is that the boot/trunk is useless. But if you don't have any kids in the back you can always use the rear seats for luggage space!

Thanks for the reply!  Im thinking the 911 turbo also, I would only drive it couple times a week vs the cayenne being used almost everyday. Another thing is, I hear the cayenne has some problems with it....is that just the first couple years they have been out or is that every year?  does anyone know?

The Cayenna has turned out to be a pretty good vehcile after a rocky start.   If you have the budget for a 911 Turbo, you could consider both a nice mid-range Cayenne and a Cayman or a Boxster: everybody is happy.

Tiptronic is Porsche's name for their semi-automatic gearbox. Basically, you can manualy change gear with out the use of a clutch pedal.

Some people love 'em, others hate 'em. You'll have to test drive one first to see which one you are!

The tiptronic is an amazing transmission, you can shift it yourself with the paddles on the steering wheel, or let it shift for itself.  What is different from other manufacturers "shift it yourself" automatics is the Tiptronic's smarts.  It holds a gear in corners, or when engine braking hard, and when pushed fast (but not floored) etc. -- always seems to kow when to do that.  And you can make it downshift right NOW, without using the paddles, with a small but very quick tap of the gas pedal -- you have to practice, but once you learn it is easy.  And the transmission in my car just seems to know what I want, without my asking.  In addition, it is worth noting that there is little performance cost: for example the 997 Turbo with the Tiptronic is faster  accelerating than the Turbo with the manual trans.
