I have a 1984 944 that will not engage when I put it into gear .
I do not believe it is the clutch because if I attempt to turn the car over in gear it does not move it grinds.
there is also a noise from the drive shaft which may indicate that ther drive shaft may have disconnected.
I can start the car out of gear but hear a noise near the drive shaft like there is something loose .
Any ideas

does that grinding noise go away when you push the clutch in? as well as when you start it. if not. then the problem might be up front as well as the transaxle in the rear. get alittle dirty and look under the car at the drive shafts as well as the torque tube play with the both of them make sure they are secure, not snapped or stripped in any way.
thats about as much as i know...
Goodluck.

sounds like a shattered R&P. Did you do any hard launches prior the the failure?
Also look back and make sure your CV axles are still connected to the transmission.

the car made a whining noise in the front of the car near the gear box prior to the problem happening .

Not sure how that is possible, as the gear box is in the rear of the car.
