924 Engine advice wanted

Hey

im currently considering buying a Porsche 924 from 1977, a black one, a real beauty!
the car is in good condition except that there is a problem with the Fuel Distributer, the guy says that it needs cleaning or in the worst case replacement. so im wondering what is the cost of having a shop clean it or is it something you can do on your own? And if it needs replacement, what is the cost of that?

also, some other advice for a first time Porsche 924 buyer?

I am not familiar with the 2.0L 924s, but if the fuel distributor is like the 911's, then you can get it cleaned and refurbished by CIS flowtech in alabama. I *Believe* it is around 400 bucks. If you get to that point, and want more info, i can get ahold of larry and see what he is charging, etc. It will require you pulling the fuel head, and sending it in. Turn around time is typically 2 weeks. It is not something you will want to tackle yourself.

anyway, why wouldn't i wanna do it myself? i consider myself at least somwhat technologically competent, and if it does not require special tools, i would at least like to give it a try! ;) do you know of any good references (books, etc.) that deals with these kind of problems?

Well, there are very few companies that rebuild the fuel heads. That there should tell you something about how easy it is.

If your 924 is from '77 it must have the V.W./Audi based engine. I don't know for sure but, wouldn't the fuel distributer be the same as a V.W./Audi with this engine?

If so, this part might be quite cheap to buy and not worth re-building. I would also think it would be quite easy/cheap to purchase a used one from a Porsche breakers yard?

Either way, I would phone around and ask, before re-building it.

anyway i found this http://www.specialtauto.com/fuel-distributors.html on the net, and 370 dollars is not a bad price, over here they take between 1000-1300€ for a fuel ditributor! I went and asked a local mechanic and he said that he would clean it for 80€ but without a guarante that it would work and install a new one for about 100€. so my problems are solved it seems like

she sure is! although the color might be a dark dark blue, i have only seen the car in the dark
