Gear box

my 1984 944 will not engage when I shift into gear
I also hear a noise like the drive train is disconnected
The car will also not engage if I put it into gear and turn the car over which to me would indicate that it is not the clutch
Any advice would be appreciated
 

Check your CV axle joints.  One may have come off the transaxle, hence no movement.

You haven't done any hard launches have you?  If so, then you are probably looking at a shattered R&P.  Check the axles first though.
