How prone is the 996 TT to RMS failure?

It is not prone to the RMS issue as it uses the standard traditional split case like the older 911's.  The 996 C2/4/boxster engines are completely different.

Thanks for the great info, as I am currently in the market for a 2003 or 2004 911 TT. Any suggestions on how to find a qualified inspector for a car that I might be looking at in another state (I'm in the US). What about if I am looking at purchasing a car from a Porsche dealer? Any specific issues to be concerned about with the 996 TT?

Thanks!

If you are purchasing a car for a P-car dealer, you should be able to get the car as a CPO (Certified Pre Owned), and should be able to get a warranty (extra of course).  I don't know exactly what options they are giving for warranties, but usually they offer one.

If you are looking outside of a porsche dealer, then ask the owner for an independant shop or porsche dealer in the area that you can have a PPI done on the car.  Usually prices will range from $150-300, so really make sure it is the car you want before getting it inspected.

All in all, the TT's are pretty bulletproof cars.  Obviously you need to look at general wear items such as brakes and tires, as well as the clutch if you are looking at a manual.

Hello,

This thread is very helpful, thanks for taking the time

I am looking at a 2003 cab, it has 33,000 miles on it. I plan on a PPI if I get that far, I am not sure the 30k service was performed, can you tell me roughly what that will cost?  if it has not been performed I would like to address it, before I get to the PPI. The car is not at a P -dealer

Thanks

Mike

I don't have my labor manual handy at the moment, but IIRC the 30k service is oil change, all the filters, inspection of the vehicle, etc.  Should be in the $7-800 range.

PorscheDoc,

I just wanted to let you know that I purchased a friends 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet yesterday. Before I bought it, I read your info on buying cars and had a Pre-Purchase Inspection performed at Fremont Porsche. Everything checked out ok, and it was worth the $150

Great information here. I want to provide some information on a website that may be helpful in the pricing discussions about the 996 (or any other model Porsche). Here is the link:

http://www.pricehub.com/price/Porsche/911

Disclaimer is that this is something I started for fun because I could never get an idea of how much cars actually sold for, only the estimates from KBB and Edmunds or the asking prices in ads. Any suggestions for improvements would be appreciated! Good luck shopping.

nice list...thanks!

I'm looking at a 2002 996TT on Tue or Wed. Having been fortunate over the years to have several 911's, this one is the ultimate. I'll use your list as a reminder of some things to look at.

The car was a one owner from '02 until August of this year. The person that has the car now purchased it as his first Porsche. Now he's discovered it's not what he really wanted. Lucky me.

My favorite comment in this thread is where you refer to the TT as "bulletproof". That I can handle.
