PorscheDoc - Do the intermediate shaft failures typically occur at the same time (ie. first 25,000 miles, over 100,00 miles, etc)?? Being someone looking for a 996, an '02+ 4S, I'd like more info about this too. Thanks,

The RMS issues are far fewer, and the interior is much more refined. Some of the early cars had some control module issues, but that was very few and far between.

Been lurking on this site for the last 2 months. First post. I'm toying with the idea of buying a 1999-2000 911 C2 manual shift. My price range is around $22-26,000; would love a C4 but don't want to justify the additional cost and it doesn't snow where I'm at (Atlanta). Don't want to go over $26,000 to be honest. This would be a 2nd/Weekender Toy to be garaged during the week. About me: I'm not mechanically inclined besides doing an oil change and other basics, I don't care to get the car on the track and I've never driven a 911 (GULP! What am I in for!?). I'm attracted to the model b/c of the value (for the years I'm interested in) matched with performance. This would be my very first Porsche and would be a HUGE present to self. I am envious (in a healthy way) of those who can afford a new 911! Some questions: 1. Ideal color combo is Silver or Black exterior with Gray interior. Why is this combination so hard to find in these years? The majority I've seen on autotrader.com are Black/Black. A few are Black/Tan or Silver/Tan. Need a tan or silver interior b/c of the heat in the dirty south. 2. Should I consider waiting a few more years to get another year? If so, what year is ideal (keeping in mind my price point)? Again, only looking at 1999 or newer. I don't mind waiting (and saving up) for several more years if it means I'm getting a car that most enthusiasts agree is a better overall car. 3. Is there a big difference mechanically/reliably speaking between 1999 and 2000 year models? 4. I know about the pre-inspection and have read most of the articles/threads on 996s. Any other good sites to look at? 5. Is there a consensus around how many miles are too many? I've seen 911s with 60,000 miles to 115,000 miles.
