can anyone tell me if the body of a 914 comes off the pan, like a beetle?

Hello there,

No the Porsche 914 is a unibody construction as are the 911s and 912s. In other words there is no pan like the VW. If the VW pan were bonded to the body it would very close to how the 914 is made.

You can use the front and rear suspension from a 914 as well as the motor and transmission but you would have to build a tube frame chassis to mount a body.
