I just received a new 2007 Cayman S.  I had driven it about 5 miles and was at a stop sign when it made a strange noise - sounded almost like one of those old fashioned air-raid sirens - the noise got louder and then stopped.  I drove another 10 miles or so and did not hear anything afterwards.  Any thoughts on what this could be or if it is normal?  Should I continue to drive the car or take it to the dealer?  Thanks in advance.

Hi
Have you heard the sound the Alarm system makes when that goes off? Was it like that?
If not was it from the engine bay? If yes I would suspect the starter motor running on!
However if the noise stopped and has not happened again then there is les to worry about.
But if its a 2007 Car it is still under warranty so why not get the OPC/Dealer to chexk it out to be sure?
Regards Big Bob

It did not sound like the alarm.  It was coming from the engine bay but was not a engine-like sound.  It may have been the starter motor - I contact the dealer and they said no worries driving it (unless the engine light flashes) - and if the noise comes again, to bring it in.  Thanks for your thoughts.

Since you're under warranty they will fix it. Never heard of that kind of sound before.

I seem to be experiencing a similar noise in my 2008 Cayman. A very high pitched, rough rotor type noise that has occured a couple of times, only when the can is stationary & idling.
Did you have any luck with the dealer when you brought the car back?

It is your engine fan kicking on.  When the car is sitting at a stop sign with no air flow to the engine, heat builds up, triggers the thermostat, and the engine bay fan kicks on (pushes warm air out the passenger side rear quarter panel vent)

hopefully thats all it is. It just seems too rough a sound to be the fan operating normally. Thanks for your help
