Sold from 1969 until 1975, the Porsche 914 was a sports car that was the product of a combined effort between
Volkswagen and Porsche. The 914 essentially served as a new model for the
912 for Porsche and fulfilled the need for Volkswagen to have a sporty yet inexpensive two-door car in their lineup. Volkswagen and Porsche decided to share a platform. The car soon became the best selling car that Porsche was offering during this model run, selling over 118,000 units.
Porsche powered the 914 with a 110 horsepower 2.0-liter flat six-cylinder engine that was taken from the 1969 911T. The 914 would also use the same suspension and braking system as the 911, which provided for great handling and braking superiority. The 914 was eventually named Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1970.
The 914 was finally discontinued when sales started to decline and the company had to choose between the 914 and the very popular 911. Because the 911 had staying power, Porsche decided to keep the 911 and replace the 914 with something more contemporary, which would be called the Porsche 924.
