The Porsche 968 was a vehicle produced by Porsche from 1992 until 1995. The 968 was a sports car that was offered both as a two door coupe and a two door convertible that was equipped with a 3.0 liter engine coupled with a six speed transmission. Quite fuel efficient, the 968 got about 17 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway, which is quite good for a sports car.
The 968 was originally produced to be a 944 S3, which was a variant of the original 944. Porsche soon realized that the 944 S3 would be so different from the S2 that it needed to simply introduce a new nameplate. The 944 was equipped with the second largest four cylinder engine that was ever offered in a production vehicle and was the most powerful naturally aspirated four cylinder engine that was ever sold in a production vehicle. The 968 also had one of the highest power per liter ratings of any street legal naturally aspirated vehicle.
Porsche had a street legal race variant of the 968 known as the Club Sport and was equipped with racing seats, upgraded suspension, larger wheels and tires, but was only sold in Europe. The 968 is the last front engine model until the Cayenne was introduced in 2003.
