The Boxster is a convertible sports car that has been produced by Porsche since 1996 with a mid mounted engine, two doors, two seats, and a folding roof. The Boxster is Porsche's smallest and least costly sports car model. The name Boxster is a play on the words boxer and roadster, which is much more catchy than either of the other words.
The first Boxster is known as the 986 and is available in a standard model that is powered by a 2.5-liter flat six-cylinder engine that provides 200 horsepower, and an S model that is powered by a 3.2-liter engine that produces 258 horsepower. The Boxster is unique in that when it reaches 75 miles per hour the rear spoiler automatically extends and then retracts at 56 miles per hour. The Boxster has sold very well because it encompasses everything that people love about the Porsche brand and the attractiveness of the 911. Both critics and consumers have enjoyed the Boxster, making it Porsche's biggest volume seller from 1997 until 2003.
Porsche introduced the next generation of the Boxster at the 2004 Paris Motor Show. The 987 was made available for the 2005 model year with the appearance not unlike the previous generation, though the base engine is a 2.7 flat six engine and the S model is powered by a 3.2 liter engine.
