The Porsche Cayenne is an sports utility vehicle produced by Porsche since 2002 and is the first V8 engine that Porsche has used in one of its vehicles since the
928. The Cayenne has proved to be a great seller for Porsche, with more than 100,000 being sold before the summer of 2005. The Cayenne is now the best selling vehicle in the United States, accounting for 40% of the Cayenne's overall sales.
The Cayenne has four engine offerings which was the 3.2 liter 447 horsepower VR6, the 4.5 liter 335 horsepower V8, the 4.5 liter 450 horsepower twin turbocharged V8, and the 4.5 liter 500 horsepower Tequipment twin turbocharged V8 engine. These engine offerings allow for this SUV to have great performance, running from 0-60 in about 5.2 seconds. The Cayenne also features a very comfortable ride, but still has the off road ability that one would expect from an SUV. Porsche fitted the Cayenne with standard tires that lends to its comfort on the road with an optional air suspension system that makes the SUV more capable off road.
At the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show Porsche introduced a more powerful Turbo S version of the Cayenne that produces 520 horsepower, which makes it the second most powerful automobile that Porsche has ever built. This version of the Cayenne is able to accelerate from 0-60 in just 4.8 seconds! Porsche expects to have a hybrid version of the Cayenne by 2010.
The Cayenne has received a lot of criticism as many Porsche enthusiasts feel as though Porsche should not have produced an SUV at all. Though many have criticized the Cayenne it continues to sell well and rumor has it that Porsche intends to offer a smaller version of the Cayenne in the very near future.
