A mid engine sports car, the Porsche Cayman was introduced for the 2006 model year. The Cayman is heavily based on the Boxster, though it uses a modified flat six-cylinder engine. Porsche has equipped the Cayman with a more stiff suspension to match its higher performance ability. The Cayman is thought to be similar to the
911 Carrera in terms of performance, which will make it interesting to watch what the sales of the Carrera do when consumers get a whiff of the Cayman S. The 911 Carrera has showed tremendous staying power, but many critics have suggested that the Cayman S will put an end to that because it has all the same power and quality but is more contemporary than the 911.
The Cayman is equipped with a five-speed Tiptronic six-speed transmission and six cylinder boxer engine that is water cooled. The engine displacement is a 3.4-liter that produces 291 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. The Cayman has a top speed of 171 miles per hour and it sells for about $60,000 in the United States. Porsche plans on releasing a cheaper variant of the Cayman for the 2007 model year for those that are attracted to the Cayman but don't necessarily want to spend the $60,000 on it!
