2009 Porsche Panamera preview

An exclusive article on the four-door coupe Panamera, it's platform and rumored related models, as well as the plans that Porsche has in mind and the competition that the 2009 model will have to beat (Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz CLS-class). Available are also a small gallery of photos and artist's impressions.

"Earlier this summer Porsche’s board of management has announced that they have taken the decision to build a four-door coupe, called “Panamera” at the Company’s Leipzig Plant. To fourth model line using a front mounted engine and rear/all wheel drive is currently under development and is scheduled to enter the market in 2009. The investments for the production of the new model are estimated at around 150 million$..."

Interesting, it looks nice but then so will its competition three years from now ('09 or even '10 before it maybe reaches the states). And the $125K price is a bit off-putting. The Maserati starts below $100k, and there is supposed to be a four-door Aston Martin by then for around $125.

Frankly, much as I like Porsches (and I love them), I am an old-school car-nut and intend to stick with tradition. Front engine V8 sedan? Aston, Maserati, Jaguar, etc., were doing those decades ago, when Porsche only did rear-engined two-door coupes. I figure I will stick with what these companies do best: Porsche builds 911s (or whatever you want to call them now) and is going on with five decades of experience there, other people build V8s sedans, and when and if I want one I will buy one from someone who took to that model type decades ago.

For those complaining about it's looks should relize that NO ONE knows what it's going to look like. At most we get a bunch of photoshops going off a vague idea of what a 4-door sport sedan from Porsche should look like and a few heavily-disguised test mules.
