Default Drove a 996 Turbo Today

Had never riden in/driven one prior to today. Got to drive one.

It was the best driving experience I have had.

That is all.

Both are smooth and very civilized, really wonderful cars. Great dialy drivers, I suppose.

Not surprising, since I like the 996 model better, I prefer the 996TT to the 997.

I recently ran the 1/4 mile up at Virginia Raceway where a 997TT was in the other lane (wasn't racing, ju8st lining up to run with whatever is in the next lane and it wasjust luck of the draw). The guy had drag radials on all four wheels and it really paid off: he just lunged off the line witha spectacular 60 foot time below1.6 seconds -- he wasmore than a two lengthes ahead of the 'vette at around two seconds, and did the SS 1/4 mile just under 11 seconds (10.95 or something) at 130+ -- impressive for an ostensibly stock car that is so smooth and civilized.((I had the usual 60 foot time with my car (and me driving) of 1.9and a few tenths seconds, but eeked out a 10.2 at 145)).

Yeah, this one was a daily driver. An 03 with about 50,000 miles on it or so. The owner said it is by far the most reliable car he has ever owned, which really suprised me. He said the maintenance costs can be astronimical at times (told me about a recent spark plug change quote at 1.8k), but also said he has kept it up with all suggested maintenance and it has never given him a problem.

Also, as for driving a 997.. I know it has 50 more hp or so, but how different is the handling? I Was really impressed with the cornering ability. Also, since I hadn't driven a 911 hard before, i found interesting how the back end behaves. I never would have expected it to have an understeer, nor did I realize that maintaining control would involve staying on the throttle if your losing the back end. At least, thats what the owner had me do.

But this thought, brings a question to mind. A choice of any car in the world, Initial price/insurance/other recurring costs notwithstanding, what cars would you have as your daily driver?

If cost and maintenance really weren't an issue, as a daily driver, probably a new Bentley Continental GT, or a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC.

Sounds like a good two picks. I would take a Ferrari Testarosa/McLaren F1/or Carrera GT. (The T-rosa may not be that special... but, I just like it.)
