Entering the world of Porsches!

I've been looking around and trying to find information about what Porsche I like best, and the more I look the more confused I get.

I'm running off a small budget, I've set aside about 3k to play with a car. Nothing more than a toy.

Honestly I'm stuck between a 944 and a 914. 914 is obviously more of a classic, and easier to work on. Supposedly it is also a better handling car but I'm not really seeing how. Weight distribution, with my research, seems to be more backheavy, while the 944 has an almost perfect distribution. Can anyone give me a serious reason why a 914 would handle any better at all?

Has anyone tracked the two cars times with the same driver around, lets say... the Nurburgring?

Any information on comparisons between these two cars would be greatly appreciated!

3k to spend...

Having owned several, i'd opt for the simplicity and handling that the mid-engine 914 offers. however, $3k may get you a 'project' car -- but that's just where the fun begins. if you intend to make one road/race worthy, you're gonna need add'l $/patience/know-how. take the leap -- but make sure half your garage is set up for the work/repairs/restoration that will be necessary...
