Thinking of buying a 944

Well, I've been looking at different cars. I get my license in less than a month, and am looking for a first car. You probably think I'm nuts as Porsches are generally not first cars unless you're wealthy.. but I don't want the average everyday Toyota. My grandpa drove a Porsche back in the day (wasn't born yet). I know its probably going to cost a bit to mantain, as I've been doing my research.

I have been looking at the 944 for some time now. The 1989 to be exact. I have been doing research as I said and have found there are several models, all being described somewhat similar.

- 89 944
- Turbo
- Turbo S
- S2
- S

What are the differences in the above, and in your opinion, which is the best for my situation?

Thanks

- Jay

Best for your situation? None of them. I honestly don't think you can afford to maintain a 944 properly until you are out of college and have a good paying job...and a second car.

But to answer your question:
89 944: 2.7L naturally aspirated engine. Standard 944 body styling.
944 Turbo: 86-88: 217hp K26/6 turbo. Updated body styling, suspension, transmission, etc
944 Turbo S: 1988: 247hp K26/8 turbo. Upgraded brakes and suspension over the standard turbo
944 Turbo: 1989: 247hp K26/8 turbo. In 89 they only offered the K26/8 turbo package, and while in 1988 they called this package the "turbo S", the designation in 89 was dropped back to just the turbo....though some people mistakenly call it an S.
944 S2 1989-1991: 16 valve DOHC cam system with a 3.0 engine. 208hp naturally aspirated. Same body styling as the turbo cars.
944 S: 1987-1988: 16 valve DOHC cam system on a 2.5L engine. Standard 944 body styling.
944: 83-85.1: Early style interior/dash. Light nimble cars. 2.5L engine. Standard body styling.
944: 85.5-88: Updated interior. 2.5L engine. Heavier than the early 944's Standard body styling.

Great Post DOC! Its easy to read and concise, thx for all you do in this regard, two questions: as A newbie to this particular Forum, I have read many posts and yours are indeed very helpful; what is the H.P. rating of the 87 944S 16V Porsche I have "for sale"? Are there any other free venues to market same and post the complete specs on in this regard. I found this car in Conneticut and was impressed w/the engine and special appointments, sunroof, alarm and other coded items found on the inner panel at the rear cargo area deck and since this is a loaded question do you think I am asking too much in this current market situation?

Appreciatively, 944S_16V
