Default Thoughts about 1978 Porsche targa as a track car

Hello everyone--

I've recently been bitten by the track bug. For almost 4 years I've been meaning to get my Infiniti G35 to a track, and now that I have, I know I'm not going to stop. The G does fine at the track--as heavy as it is, 306 hp is enough to get it moving. However, I think I want to leave the big sedan as my daily driver (complete with carseat--which is why it's take a few years to get out), and maintain a separate car for track days.

So I started brainstorming about every car I've ever wanted. I quickly settled on the idea of driving a Porsche that's roughly my age. I figure we'll get creaky and slow down over the next 30 years or so together.

So, 1978. I think the 78 targas are beautiful, but I'm a total newbie when it comes to the 911s. What do people think about 1978? Good year? Notoriously bad year? What do I need to look out for as I begin the search? Are there subtleties of trim that make a huge difference?

Of course I'll want to find a good local Porsche specialist (I'm in the Chicago area if someone has a recommendation) to check out anything before I would buy it, but I want to figure out if this is a good idea before I go spend a bunch of time and money on the project. For example, at this point I'm not even sure whether the 911SC and the 930 were different models built that year or not. And if so, is one more common? or better suited for track driving?

I don't mean to waste anyone's time with what I realize are probably idiotic newbie questions, but we all have to start somewhere, right?
