1988 911
Hi my uncle owns a 88 911 carrera targa, he has asked me to give it a look over and do an oil change. Im a Ford Certified technician but have never touched a Porsche, what are things to look for and is there anything diferent about the oil change versus a normal car? any and all help will be greatly appreciated. also what kind of oil and how much?
Well you have 1 oil filter and 2 drain plugs. Make sure to use new crush seals on the drain plug (22x27). Start by filling 8.5 quarts, then starting the engine. The oil has to be checked at operating temp and while at idle. Add as needed. If you check cold, you will wayyyy over fill it. I like to run about 3/4 of the way up on the dipstick. Better to run a hair low than overfull.
Just use castrol 20w-50 dino oil. Filters are hard to get from the autoparts store, so I either recommend getting a Mahle or Mann filter online (or from worldpac if you have access), or getting the porsche filter from the dealer. If you go to the dealer, then you can get the correct crush seals for the drain plug as well (you won't find those at an autoparts store either)
