944 engine compartment squeek

i have an '89 944 and recently have noticed a slight squeek coming from the engine compartment. now i'm thinking on the lines of a waterpump or an altinator. its not the AC cus when i blast the AC, the squeek doesnt get sqeekyer. any ideas?

RE: 944 engine compartment squeek

Is it a rotating squeeking sound?
Does it increase with engine speed (revs)?

Disconnect your power steering belt and Alternator/AC belt, and start the car. If it still squeels, and is coming from the front of the engine, it is probably the waterpump. Stop driving the car immediately and replace it before it siezes and takes out your timing belt.

no revs dont affect it pitch. the pitch stays pretty constant when driving. its slight and you can hear it when you pop open the hood. its hard to notice it over the belt noise

RE: 944 engine compartment squeek

I'd try what PorscheDoc suggests, it most probably is either the alternator, power steering or the water pump or belts.

GOOD LUCK!
