944 -not getting spark

My non-turbo 944 died on me while driving. It will turn over but not start. I'm not getting spark. I tried a new ignition coil, distributer and rotor. I tested the plug and coil wires, and the plugs are good. Anyone know what I should check next? I'm stumped. Thanks, all!

Put a test light from coil + to ground. Is there light? Put the test light from coil + to coil - while someone
cranks the starter. Does it blink?

DME relay

RE: 944 -not getting spark

PorscheDoc- I had the relay tested by 2 different electricians, and they both said it's OK.

wdonovan- I have not tried the test light yet, but I have tried a brand new coil. I figured that would eliminate the coil, unless you're trying to track down another problem...

Thanks for the quick replies!

Does the tach bounce when cranking?

RE: 944 -not getting spark

Sorry about the double post- I thought maybe no one replied to older posts.
I turned it over2 days ago to check the tach and it started. I let it run, shut it off and restarted. Then the next day I started it, ran for about 5 min and died. Not bogged down and died, but cut right off like the key was turned. Yesterday it did the exact same thing.
Tach does not move when cranked.
Just to eliminate some things, it has a new feul pump and filter, pressure regulator and dampener,1 new injector and seals for the rest, starter is a year old, and I put in a new coil and distributor to see if those were the problem, but took them back out.
Could the DME relay be working intermittently (sic)? Ignition module? Alternator-I had it tested recently?
Thanks again!

If the tach does not bounce, then the possibilites are:

Bad DME (cracked solder joints)
Bad DME relay
Bad Reference or Speed sensor
Bad engine wiring harness to the R&S sensor (this is unfortunately becoming very common)

you can try checking the crankshaft positioning sensor. it went out on my older bmw and was doing the same thing.

Called a reference sensor on these cars.

RE: 944 -not getting spark

I found a used DME relay, and it seems to be working. I don't quite trust it completely, as my car was starting sporatically before I replaced it. It hasn't died since. If that was the problem, I apologize to Porsche Doc for not trying a different one first.
