Bleeding 944 lifters down
 
Hi, I am working on a 84 944 non-turbo. The motor we bought had 1 bent exhaust and 3 bent intake valves. I had our head guy (I work in a machine shop) go through the head. I bolted the head back on and can't get it to run (it at least ran with the bent valves). It has spark, fuel, and injector pulse but it won't fire. I triple checked cam timing. I performed a compression test and only get 50-60 lbs on all cylinders. I wondered if the lifters needed bled down as in other overhead cam engines? Are they staying up and holding the valves partially open? Should they be tight or should you be able to partially collapse them? Thanks for any input.

THey should be tight, you should not be able to push in the button on the lifter. With that being said though, that is not the cause of the no start issue. So you have confirmed spark at the plugs, the injectors are for sure spitting fuel? What is the fuel pressure?

Hi,yes there is spark at the plugs and the fuel pressure is 50lbs at the end of the rail. Why is there only 50-60 lbs of compression at cranking speed? As I stated, it is a fresh head and it ran before I had the head gone through (even though it had bent valves)

Sorry for the second reply..but I did pull the rail and I watched the injectors spray.

Did you have the throttle body all the way open when cranking on the compression test? A closed throttle body will cause low #'s. Are you sure you aren't off a tooth on the cam?
Your fuel pressure is also way high. It should be 36psi +/- 3psi.
