boxster power loss..help

I have a 97 Boxster with 41,000 miles. Last night while attempting to pass (about 4000 rpm 3rd gear) the porsche had a sudden and huge drop in power. There are no indicator lights on and the engine sounds fine. If I barely press the accelerator the car will reach cruising speed but if I "punch" it, I get an immediate chug and power drop as if it had some type of rev limiter. Is it toast? Please any help, I am about to have it towed 7o miles for service.

Have you done any service to the car recently? Sounds like a hose clamp is loose on the air intake system. I would have a dealer or shop with a PIWIS check the system for any pending codes.

Thanks a lot. In response, it has not been serviced recently but oil pressure and engine temp are good. Due for 45,000 mile checkup soon. I have never had the slightest of problems. Other Porsche owners telling me that car would have shut off if major problems. Is that acurate? just don't need a $3000.00 surprise.
