My 996 got some issues???
 

Hey guys, i just picked up my 1st porsche, its a 2002 Carrera C4. At the beginning everything looked ok, except power steering pump.

1. Changed power steering pump, steering wheel still so hard to turn its insane.

2. Oil leak (propably rear main seal?) heard its common, i re-top the oil, a week later digital oil level tells me to refill, and every time i'm in idle, "level oil low" message comes on, when i top it up again, message goes away.

3. Got very slight ticking noise when car is in idle

4. From time to time (usually when i top up the oil), when I just start the car, WHITE smoke comes from ONLY the driver side exhaust for a minute or so.


Other than that the car runs mint :confused:
What do you guys think? Do you think issues 2,3 and 4 are connected?

Looks to me like there might not be a drain plug crush washer installed on the oil pan, which is allowing it to leak. I don't see a trail coming from the RMS/IMS area. If there is a RMS leak, you will see it at the junction of the engine to the transaxle.

That is a big enough puddle, you should stop driving the car until you figure out what is wrong.

For the white smoke, I would start by replacing the oil air separator. It should not smoke for a minute by any means.

How many miles are on the car?

You are right, it is a faulty drain plug. But that still does not explain the white smoke from one of the exhausts. Could a sticky piston? are they devided to separate exhausts 3 v 3 ?

Even tho i dont know if that would cause it to burn oul, it would explain the slight ticking. Do the rest of the 966's you guys have , have a small ticking when engine running>?

A sticky piston? Not sure what that means. Change the oil air seperator. If that isn't your problem, then you have really BIG problems. It will likely take care of the issue.

Switch to 5w-40 oil and the ticking at idle should lessen. If it is a high mileage 996, then you might need to change your chain ramps in regards to the ticking. They all have some drivetrain noise due to the thin oil people run in them.

Ok try to change the separator, and im already running 5w40, and the car has only 40k miles on it.

Have you upgraded your IMS bearing yet? With that low mileage, you may seriously consider doing that.

ya that would be a good idea, but a lot of money, almost a rebuild...

Hi. I'm new on his forum. Just brought a 2002 996 c2. Lovely car but recently it's started putting out smoke on startup. It's very brief but the longer the car has been idle the more smoke although it's not a massive amount. One burst and it's gone. Is this just oil discharge I have read about or is it the aos?
