Noise from back of '86 944 Turbo

My '86 944 Turbo has strarted to make a ticking noise in the back. Is a bit intermitent. Tends to come and go a bit under differnet acceleration. Doesn't sound like a diff or gearbox noise but I'm no expert.

If I'm accelerating and can hear it when I depress the clutch it goes away.

Any thoughs as to what to start checking first? Anyone had experience of noisy clicking or ticking from clutch?

All advice appreciated.

RE: Noise from back of '86 944 Turbo

Ticking is typically a bad rear wheel bearing, or a CV joint that is going out. I would check for any signs of play in the rear wheels (raise the car up, and check). If those are good, then I would check your CV axles for play, and repack them if they are not bad. Usually by the time the ticking starts, it is too late to save a joint.
