Painting an 01 911 coupe
 

My first Porsche, bought a used 2001 911 Coupe, with 42K miles on it. Car is in great shape, especially interior and maintenance upkeep. I happen to be pretty picky on exterior paint issues. There are some scratches and dings I just dont want to live with. I found out hood was already painted, non Porsche dealer didnt disclose. I was thinking of getting some portions painted, been to a few different auto body shops, they quoted off the charts prices! Car is Arctic Silver and paint guys are claiming hard to match existing panel, door, etc that would not need paint because of clear coat issues. Anybody have any suggestions? Two of the scratches are pretty noticeable so not sure I can live with them. Thanks.

Short of repainting the entire car, I don't know what else to tell you. A good detailer will be able to get out most of the swirl marks etc, but anything that has gone through the clear, they will not be able to fix. Remember, especially when it comes to paint, you get what you pay for. If you want it done right, it will cost money....and time.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Anyone know any good Porsche painters in So Cal area?

If your car was not much exposed to sunlight a good painter must be able to match the paint on your car. But they don't like to do it. Even scratches can be repaired without a problem. I just done it on my Porsche and on some others of my cars. I repaired some stone chips on the hood of our personal car, painted in champagne metallic, and that is not an easy paint to repair. The disadvantage on a new paint job, it will never be like the original factory paint. And if you don't know, what kind of paint they are using, you got to believe, what the painter tells you. And a good paint job cost a few bucks, and most of these paint shops do not cover the car very well, so you will see all kind of overspray. Try to find a painter who has the ability to repair your paint.

Thanks for the info. Are you saying you had spots blended or a section painted, i.e, fender, skirt, etc? I have no issue with spending some bucks to have it done right. Any chance your painter is located in So Cal? Thanks again.

Well, silver is nearly impossible to match completely (from all angles). I paid something around $6000-$7000 if I rememberfor my vette to be repainted silver after putting ona custom lightweight front end. Only way to really assure yourself it will come out looking good.

Yes, you can do both. I did spot repairs and section repairs. But I do it myself. It is however time consuming. I am sure, you will find a paint shop, who does this kind of work. Ask around who repaint higher line car rentals.
