356 engine to transaxle match problem
ifound a 1962 (production year late 1961) 356 t6 car, 1600 standard, with the original transaxle and 6 volt starter in it. the engine was missing.
ifound a morris manx dune buggy with a strong running 1962 std 1600 porsche engine in it.
the enine sn tells me it was produced in late 1961 and matches the sns of engines that were installed into the sn of this car. how lucky was i!
the dune buggy has an early vw tranaxle in it and this engine/transaxle matchoperated fine.
i removed the 1600 porsche engine out of the dune buggy and installed it into the 356.
when i installed the porsche 1600 engine onto the porsche transaxle, the engine is now locked up.i now understand the engine flywheel, starter or both were modified/swapped to allow the 1600 porsche engine to bolt up to the early vw transaxle in the dunebuggy.
i am looking for any information/experience any of you may have on a swap like this. i need to check the dune buggy starter, to see if it is 6 vs 12 volt. the dune buggy may have been originally 12 volt or upgraded to 12 volt? i need to figure out what was done to the porsche 1600 engine to allow it to work with early vw transaxle, and reverse this back to original, to allow the engine to now match the 356 porsche transaxle it was originally fit up to.
i am hoping it was just a flywheel and/or starterchange from porsche 6 volt to vw 12 volt set up?
any information anyone with experience out there may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. i have many old vw 1200/1500 engine 6 volt flywheels around. are they the same as the porsche 1961 1600 engine flywheel?.....thanks all!
