I have a porsche 1974 914 1.8 motor. can anyone give me the blow by blow procedure on how to remove the gas tank? i have to get at the fuel pump which is under it. no way to get at it from under the car. thanks

Hmm...looking in the service manuals, it doesn't say the pump is under the tank. Instructions are:

Remove right side heating duct
Detach wire connector
Remove M6 retaining nuts from rubber mount
Loosen hose clamp on lines

Installation is opposite of reverse.


If you do want to remove the tank though:
Remove gravel shield
Drain fuel by detaching fuel hoses under car
Disconnect hose from activated charcoal canister and expansion chamber
Detach expansion chamber from fuel tank
Detach connector from fuel tank sending unit
Loosen mounting strap and remove tank from top.

The fuel pump is often moved to the front, near the gas tank area. There is a tin cover bolted to the steering rack support under the car. remove this cover and on the passenger side you will see a small access hole below the tank, inside this area are the two hoses on the bottom of the tank. If you havent already found the fuel pump, follow the lines. (the fuel pump is originally mounted back by the engine, on the passenger side viewed from under the car above the right side heater control box) If you are working on the fuel lines it is often a good idea to clamp these lines to prevent the gas from running out, or to drain the fuel tank for removal. To remove the tank, unbolt the expansion chamber on top (around the fuel cap) remove the vent hose, unplug the fuel level sender, unbolt the retainer strap and remove the tank from the top. Good Luck.
