when to shift my 911

I just bought an 2003 911 c4s and I am not sure at what rpm is optimal for shifting when accelerating hard. Is it right at the red line? Also, I was told you do not have to push the clutch to the floor but only need to press 1/4 to 1/3 to the floor and can shift. I've tried it and it seems to shift smoother. Is this bad for the clutch?

For quickest acceleration, shift at the red line or just before - wait too long and you will hit the rev limiter.

The clutch usually disengages at about 1/3 to 1/2 depression of the pedal and any more travel just delays the timing of the shift. On the other hand I know of one owner who ruined a transmission ring set by not depressing the clutch quite enough.

But you can determine where the clutch engages by just playing with it in your driveway, with the car in first or reverse and letting it out gently until you discover just where it starts to engage and budge the car. Then make just a bit farther than that point the limit that you depress the pedal each time you shift.
