Z06 Guy.... newbie wants 996 :)

Hello P-forum.

I'm a former Mustang 5.0 guy, did the aftermarket bolt-on route, then stroker, then blown stroker.....

Then moved up to my Z-06 Vette.

Now looking at an 01-03 996....

Test drove one today and was impressed with the rush of twin-turbo boost. This was an 02 996 35Kmiles for 59K ask price.

Here to learn about what years to avoid, what to look for when buying a "lightly used" (if that exists in a TT) 996.

Jeff - Houston

PS - How will an 02 996 compare to my 01 Z06 regarding 1/4 mile times, handling, daily driving living? For those who are not fam with the Z.... it's a mid to low 12 sec 1/4 car dep on driver, pretty light just over 3000 lbs and very very cheap to operate.

The 996 has been a dream of mine for quite some time ;)

RE: Z06 Guy.... newbie wants 996 :)

If the 996 is a Turbo it will be about the same (I know from experience), if it is naturally aspirated the 996 will do about half a second or more longer in the1/4. My 04 996 Tiptronic does 13.5 (six speed is noticeably faster), my ZO6 stock with stock tires did 12.5s easy. A 996 is a great car and in my opionion the reason to own it is the finesse and balance, not the sheer power -- for thatn GM V8s can't be beat for the money.

Realize that even if you get a 997 Turbo, while you have a very fast car for a factory stock car, there are lots of folks cruising on weekend nights with metal that will just kill it: its just too easy and inexpensive to modify American iron. My 'vette does low 10 second quarter miles, the Camaro mid to high 9s. Both get beat occasionally by cars we meet on the street.

If you want just the best all around daily driver, I advise getting the 996. If you want dominating street performance, I'd advise spending the money on modifying the 'vette. Best plan is, like me, to do both.
