1974 911 carrera targa?
Hi, all
I'm new to porsche, I've been looking to buy a porsche for along time. Someone is selling me a 1974 911carrera targa for $5000. the car looks in fair condition. He did tell me it had a oil leak. I will appreciate any information or opinion you have. |
RE: 1974 911 carrera targa?
You need to find where the oil leak is coming from first. If it is from the cylinder heads, then you are looking at a rebuild to fix it. Figure about 7500 for a bare bone rebuild.
Other places that it may leak from that, while not all that cheap to pay someone to replace, are still cheaper than from the heads. Cam cover gaskets Rear thermostat gasket Camshaft oil lines Reservoir to engine cooler line Valve cover gaskets (covers will warp, and the paper gasket will not stop the leak). We have designed aluminum covers with a rubber gasket that stop this. Rear main seal If you can get some pictures of the area around the oil leaks, I can probably tell you where the oil is coming from. |

I have the guy emailing me some pics. What do you recommned, I' am looking for a porsche that i could work on it with time. Do some engine work to it etc. Do you think it's a good idea to get a 1974 targa 911 carrera or another model and year. I really dont like the 944, 928. I was also looking at a 1986 porsche 911 with about 110k miles for $11.500.
