2 more 911s have IMS failure
 
Talking to my mechanic this morning, he told me he has 2 more 911s (2001, 1998) that have suffered the dreaded IMS failure. Oner at 66000 miles and the other in mid 40000. The one may beable to be rebuilt locally but the other is destroyed. I am scheduled to have the L&N Engineering IMS Retro kit install in a few days. Better safe then sorry.

Rob,
I have been doing some research on this issue as well. The M96 engines are definitely susceptible to this problem. You are making a wise choice in doing this upgrade.

Does anyone have information (or a link to it) about the M97 engines? There seams to be information regarding this issue scattered around the web. I would like to find, or put together, a list of engines that have this issue.

i doubt if the upgrade is recommended. Could you explain from where did you get an idea like that ?

From what I have found (both on the web and talking with porsche service) the older M96 engines have this issue. Certainly something to consider when doing your PPI on one and also something to keep an eye on if you own one of these engines. I think just doing the upgrade for the sake of doing it may not be warranted. Having the bearing inspected is key. If it is showing signes of wear and impending failure the LN kit sounds like a good option. Ignoring the issue could cost you big $$ in the long run. When they fail the engine case can be damaged to the point of no return. At that point you are looking at a replacement case as well as labor to R&R the engine at a minimum.

Ims failure
 
I am a new 2002 Porsche 996 4s owner 32k miles and been reading the forums about this dreaded IMS failure issue. Basically scared me to death so I just coughed up $2400 for the upgrade. Better safe than sorry.

My mechanic ( Auto Sport Engineering, Stow, MA) told me he has a couple 996's with blown engines just sitting in his lot waiting for the owners decision to part with $17-$20k for a new engine. I am no expert on Porsche but before considering buying this model you should check if the IMS upgrade was done. If not, factor this into the price of the purchase. $2400 is alot of money -but I figure I just saved $15-17k.

The RMS issue is a leaking seal, nothing more. It's actually quite rare to find a car with a leaking RMS these days - most leaking seals have been replaced with the latest version which doesn't leak. Those motors which could not be fixed because they were out of spec were replaced by Porsche under warranty. RMS issues are easy to spot and the issue is harmless, except maybe a spot of oil on the garage floor.
