911 Coupe or Convertible

Ok I just wanted to take a little poll on what body style Porsche 911 you would want.

I don't want to insult any convertible owners I just like he Coupe, its more Porsche Racing, then mid life crisis, and also the hardtop roof of a 911 is part of the styling of the car, its just an opinion though, thats what this poll is for.

This is only for the 911, obviously not the boxster or cayman.

Thanks John

RE: 911 Coupe or Convertible

I say coupe for a few reasons. With aconvertible is is going to fade, the back window if plastic is going yellow, if there is anything of value in the car the top is going to be cut. My uncle has a cabri and he now just leave the car unlocked now because two different tops have be cut to break in.

Just my 2 1/2 cents.

Cabriolet for two reasons:

1. I've never owned a convertible in my life, nor have I owned a Porsche before this year's big purchase.

2. It IS my mid-life crisis car!

cab all the way
since '02, the rear window has a defog unit in glass an incredible accomplishment after 35 years of sports cars with yellow distorted plastic windows.
the '05's and newer can open/close while driving which is fantastic when you just can't stop to put the roof up.
the newer roofs are more sound proof and finished beautifully inside with no bars showing like the old ragtops.
the windscreens which have been around for quite a while allow you to have no wind at even 100 mph.
the soft top looks cooler and even nicer than the new folding hard tops of bmw, lexus, mb
the cab adds a whole new dimension to driving in nice weather.

I agonized over coupe or cabrio.... blah blah. I seldom put the top down but nothing compares with the sound of PSE with top down and Sport Chrono on. I am so lucky I decided on the cabrio. 997 soft-top is quiet when up, fits perfect and folds beautifully with glass rear window. The chassis is very tight.
I experienced the mid-life crisis nonsense over buying a 911. The smart remarks came from those who drive an MPV and worry about the cost of fuel. I was heckled by some, saying it's a MLC and what a waste of money. Guess who is still asking me for a ride and gobsmacked looking each time I take it out? Let the wind blow through your hair or comb-over ... who gives a flying. It is hard to wipe the grin off your face each time you take it out. It is being truely selfish without need for explanation/justification to anybody.

Hi John, I chose the Targa.. It's the best of both worlds plus.. It has a rear hatch that opens.. It's a pure joy to drive with the the roof open or closed.. Check one out..

The biggest variable would seem like your location. I live in the Bay Area - perhaps the cabriolet capital of the world. I've done a lot of traveling and don't think there is any place better for a cab than here. My personal cab credo is if it is warmer than 32 degress, less than 100 and not raining, than the top MUST be down. That is almost every day of the year. On days that don't qualify, I keep it in my driveway, covered (you should always cover a cab it it's outside - but then again, I cover my Prius).
The coupe is likely a slightly better performer - stiffer, lighter. But every so slightly.
As for the looks, well, with the top up, vote goes to the coupe. Top down, c'mon, it's a cab!
