911 Engine change
 

Hello all,

I have a 911 Targa, and an considering an engine change. Well, actually I have no engine or transmission.....ha ha.....

My research indicates that a VW Jetta, 1.8 liter engine would fit right in. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Anyone know what I could use as a transmission?

I don't know what year your 911 is but I've rebuilt and sold 5 911s over the last 30 years (all 1976 and prior cars). I would not replace the engine and transmission with anything other than the original so that you maintain the value of your car. Engines / transmissions are probably available from cars that have rusted out, so I'd check that alternative out first.

Hi Chuck. Thanks. The Porsche is a 1974 Targa. I bought it with no engine or tranny, and I will look around for what you suggested.

If you live anywhere near there, you could part it out on ebay and keep the engine / transmission.

The Jetta engine won't fit. its a water cooled vertical cylinder in line engine whereas you need an air cooled flat six -- hard to imagine two engines more different -- I'd drop whatever reserach source suggested it would fit.
Best is to install another '74 engine. Next best something from slightly later. they are not that easy to find but not impossible to get, either. It sounds to me like this is potentially a major project. I'd guess that once you find an engine for it, you'll still need another $20K to turn it into an acceptable car, probalby twice that to make it exceptional.

You should call around your local junkyards and also check ebay motors for a possible donor car.
