993 As A Daily Driver

I tried this post in the "New Member" section to get no replies. I would like to know before so that I don't miss out on a purchase.

Hello,

Folks I'm a longtime BMW guy thinking of jumping ship, somewhat! I"m an M3 guy thinking of going 911, either 993 C4 or 996. There is a low miles well kept 993at my local dealer thatis available. Another dealer in my area has a 996available. The 993 has slightly lower miles. The vehicle will be replacing my '99 M3 E36 as a daily driver. Any advice will be surely appreicated!

Is the 993 a daily driver?The C4 would be great being I'm inSE/PA. Help? [&o]

Sauber,

Both the 993 and 996 can be/are used as daily drivers. That said, the 996 will (by most accounts) be a more comfortable daily driver. The 996 has a hydraulic clutch which is more manageable, and more 'creature comforts' are found in the 996. Many argue that the 996 lost much of the Porsche look, but the numbers show it performs better than the 993. These online forums may scare you about the 996 and RMS, but the truth is the issue is overblown. Of all the 996 owners I know, none have had RMS issues. My 996 has 44K on it with no signs. Also, per Doc I believe that if the RMS issue hasn't surfaced past 30K miles it is highly unlikely to become a problem.

Good luck.

jjb,

Thanks for the reply! I'll keep your comments in mind. What about the maintenace on your 996, do you do it yourself? The DYI stuff like, oil change, spark plugs etc. I do most of the work on my M3's and was hoping to do the same on the P-car.

Thanks!

I do minor DIY work on my 996. I do know that oil changes are MUCH easier on a 996 than a 993. The DIY section here is great and provides all the info you will need to tackle most jobs yourself.

Personally, I like the look of the 993 better, but opted for the 996 because 1)more bang for the buck ('97-98 993s are more expensive than 99-00 996s for the most part) and 2) reliability/driveability/performance are all better on the 996. The only caveat, again, is RMS, but that can be largely mitigated with a good PPI.

Good Luck!
