996 Smells Hot - But Not Overheating?
 

Hi Guys-

Just got back from a short trip - about 90 miles - and my 2003 996 smells hot when I get in the garage. However, the temperature gauge is sitting at 180*, which I believe is about right. No leakage from the vehicle - with the exception of a little bit of water from the AC, which is normal too, I believe.

I averaged 78mph on the trip. Any ideas?

Hey, I feel for you too. I have a 2003 996 also and suspect you get the same smell I get. Initially, I thought I had a leak of some sort and spent a great deal of time looking for it. Engine was clean as a whistle and found no leaks. So I took it to my dealer and had them check it out. They agreed that there was a curious smell, but couldn't find a cause for it. The smellseems more dominantaround the rear wheel area on the driver's side. I did some searching on other forums and have found several other owners that have experienced the same thing. No leaks, engine not too hot, but get a burning smell after driving for a bit. The mechanic proposed to me that the smell is from the brakes. I personally don't agree, but to date I have yet to discover the cause. There has got to be something heating up and putting off the odor, but I havent found anyone that knows what it is.

They always smell hot. Very normal as long as your gauge is around the 180-190 mark
