RE: 996tt timing chain

Hi Jeff
You are right the timing chains are duplex metal chains. I take it you notice the noise more on idle? or when the engine is not loaded. The chain could be OK but the tensioner at fault.
Doc Willen can you adjust chain tension externally or is it dependent only on the oil pressure driven tensioner?.
The chain anti thrash pads that are assembled to the timing case could also be worn.It would be worth seeing if you can get someone else to listen to confirm your diagnosis, but I must admit that timing chain thrash is a distinctive noise what ever vehicle its on!
Best Regards Big Bob

You are probably hearing the intermediate shaft, which is somewhat normal.
