airbag light in 911

Hi, does anyone know anything about the airbag light going off? I just bought a 1999 carrera and it went off couple of days ago. I called a mechanic and they said that it has something to do with old sealbelt clip and faulty wiring underneath the seat? and it will cost over $600 to fix it? Is that true? Has anybody else have or had the same problem? I would really appreciate some help. Thanks
Chris

I have a 1999 Porsche Carerra and the same thing happened to me two years ago. From what I understand it is a very common problem for that year. Why they never did a recall is beyond me!!! However I took my car into an well known trusted independent Porsche mechanic and he reset the codes. I have not had problems since. Have them attempt to clear the codes first, then look into fixing the problem.

Have a '95 993 and my airbag light came on at about 60k miles. The local independent repair shop said: "sometimes it can be the seatbelt - but your "code" says "intermittent contact or low contact". He took out the driver's airbag and cleaned the connection terminals as well as the battery terminals - and the airbag light wentoff. By the way, you can't reset an airbag light even though your car has OBDII. I think for safety reasons (and most likely insurance and liability reasons), if the airbag light is on, you have to get it fixed then the light goes off.

I sent Chris an email, but for the forums info, the seatbelt buckles are a known issue in the early 996 and boxsters. A new buckle IIRC is less than $100, and it takes less than an hour to put it in. The light will have to be reset with a PST2 or a PIWIS though, so you will need to find a dealer or independant shop that has one of those computers.
