Battery Problem ?
 

I have a 2000 996 (20K) that for the most part sits in the garage and is only driven about 200-400 miles per year, on NICE days :-). I have a Porsche battery maintainer on it but this week when I went to take it out for a ride the battery was dead. In checking it looks like it boiled a lot of the water/electrolyte out of some of the cells. I filled them back up and put it on my regular charger yesterday. Today it still wouldn't start so I'm assuming the battery is shot. (Note: this is the second time since I got the car this has happened, but I assumed some of it was because the car was in Arizona prior to me having it shipped back east asfter my broehte passed away) I believe my brother had replaced the battery once before he passed away, but am not sure.

Two questions:
1: Shouldn't the Porsche Battery Maintainer stop the trickle charge when the battery is fully charged so this doesn't happen? If so could I have a bad charger? I can't find a lot of info on this one Item# 980.611.980.00 on how it operates.

2: I would like a orignal equip. battery, but is there something else I should consider

The battery maintainer will work properly if the battery isn't junk. I would not even consider an OEM battery, unless you want it to happen to you again in a year. They are junk batteries. I would stick in a group 48 interstate battery and be done with it.

Well, checked locally and they didn't have a Group 48 and tried to sell me a Goroup 47, which Interstate told them would work. But if I wanted to wait 2 days they could get me a H6/Group 48. It's about $60 more but I want the right one and not have to cobble something in to fit.

You can use multiple sized batteries in the tray. The holes are drilled for different length battery. A group 47 would probably work as well. The group 48 is a slightly shorter battery than OEM
