Clutch too stiff

Hi,

I have a 911 carrera with 48k on it. I took it for yearly maintanance and the porsche folks said that the clutch feels too stiff and that the clutch might be slipping and it might cause damage to flywheel.

I just bought the car from another owner 5 months before. when I asked the owner about this he said, that the clutch might need to be replaced. With just 48k on it, do you think that the clutch really needs replacement?

I am also confused what is actually meant by the clutch slipping. Is it when I shift from 1st to 2nd, and press gas, its still not in gear? I have that at sometimes but very rarely. So trying to figure out if the clutch is really slipping or not.

Please advise.

I'm afraid you need to fit a new clutch. The 1st to 2nd symptoms are the key, as you are more likely to get slip in lower gears. One would hope to get more than 48K, but it depends how the car is driven (has been driven)
Get the clutch done. The longer you leave it the more risk of damage to the flywheel.

My clutch is more stiff than a regular sedan, but your slipping is not normal. Take it to an independent dealer.

Actually, to test if the clutch is starting to slip, go out and drive it around until it is good and warm. Then in 4th or 5th gear, romp on it. If the rpm's go up, and the car does not accelerate, then the clutch is slipping. The higher gears will put more load on the clutch than lower gears. It is not going to damage the flywheel, and 50k out of a clutch in a 911 isn't too bad. I have seen them slip as early as 25k miles (even earlier in cars we up the hp in).

Good time to replace your RMS as well. I've got another 10K and I'll be doing the same thing. Good luck
