Early 70s 911 Question
 

I'm a hopeful wannabe 911 owner and hope to get sage advice from Porsche veterans.

I've read that air cooled 911soffer amore visceral driving experience, and have read that the 2.7 engine is considered "iconic" by some authors.

That's the extent of my Porsche knowledge :D

I'm not too concerned with horsepower numbers or track days. I only hope to capture some of this visceral feel they're talking about. I wouldn't want it for an everyday driver, just something to enjoy on some twisty backroads on a sunny day.

Are my eyes being clouded by the mist of nostalgia? Am I getting myself into trouble for wanting an old air cooled 911? ShouldI forget about this "visceral" stuff and just buy the newest 911 I can afford?

Thanks for any tips in avoiding any pit falls

Orson,

I think the older models do provide a feeling that many say they newer ones lack.. Having said that I also realize that the newer ones have greater comfort, reliability, and various features lacking in the older ones.

It's really a choice only you can make. As this will be your first Porsche, and it seems you favor the air cooled years, my suggestion would be tobuy the newest air cooled model you can afford.

Drive as many as you can, get a good PPI and I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice. Hope this helps.

I had a dozen Porsches, starting with a '64. The only thing I miss in the older911's is the sound, it's just not there in these new water cooled engines. It's possible that over the years I've grown used to the creature comforts in the newer cars - I don't know. How are your mechical abilities? Got lots of tools or the willingness to acquire lots of tools? These cars - depending on the year - can have issues. As long as you understand that going in you'll have fun. They're wonderful to drive, they lack the incredible HP the newer cars offer - but they sure are fun.
