Extended warranty for Porsche from private seller?

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your forum. I am a new Porsche buyer so this has been a great resource (especially the 996 buying guide).

I'm looking for a 2002/2003 911. There are 2 that I could purchase - 1 from a reputable dealer with 37K miles at $38K plus a comprehensive extended warranty at $2.8K. One with 53K miles from a private seller at $33K. Assuming it passes my PPI (thank youPorscheDoc), I actually like the cheaper one better (nicer color combo for me) and it's hard to justify paying $5K more for the dealer car.

So... my hesitation is the warranty. I'd love to buy a good extended warranty to have the peace of mind that I won't be screwed in the event of some catastrophic failure. It's even more important for the higher mileage car.

A used luxury car dealership told me that you can only buy them through dealers. I can't believe that's true. Does anyone know of a good option they purchased directly and are happy with?

Thanks so much,
Carolyn

Porsche warranty can only be provide through Porsche dealer. There are other warranty companies out there and the are warranty companies that have taken peoples money too. I have bought a non-MFG warranty are there were ALWAYS problems. It took a day to two days just to get work approved. Then I ALWAYS had to pay a little more for some shop supply not covered.
I will never ever buy anything but a MFG warranty if I buy one.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the response. Good to know.

I did get a quote from the Porsche dealer and they said they could sell me one. But it's serviced through the same outside companies, and their pricing is really steep. $4500 for 3 yr/36K, $5800 for 4 yr/48K.

The other companies that I've found that have been recommended seem to sell warranties in almost all states but CA. I'll keep looking...

That is because the state of CA AGs office really cracked down on them. Serveral companies went bankrupt 5-6 years ago and a lot of people were left with nothing.

When I bought my 99 C2 after a positive PPI I took the 3.5k warranty price and put it in a separate MM account, adding $50 per month.
I haven't touched it over a three year period and have a balance of over 5k now. I realize this doesn't work for catastrophic failures but it gives you a cushion as the car ages and if nothing happens you are ahead of the game.
