Failed Inspection *Help*

Hello,

I have a 1997 911 carrera and I am having issues passing inspection. The car has 12k miles and sits dormant for most of the year. The battery is usually off and the computer has erased the emission and other things needed to pass inspection. I was told to drive around until the computer picks up the information and I have done so. I am still having issues and was wondering if anyone had any advice?

Well, you have to put at least one driving cycle on it before it can be inspected. My Ferrari was the same thing -- it came off the airplane (they fly them, don't boat them, over from Italy) with a dead battery and needed 70 miles for the driving cycle before you could read the OBD computer codes for emissions certification. I did that and it passed. Hopefully with a driving cycle on it your car will pass. If not, the OBD compuyter codes will give your mechanic more than just a hint about what is wrong and it can be fixed. it should not be major with only 12k miles ont he car.

I suggest you buy a battery trickle charger - they cost only a bit and you then can leave the car for months without this happening. You can get them at any pep Boys or AutoZone, etc. Get one that automatically cycles to low current when the battery is fully charged.

My trusted mechanic said that he had to do 16 or 18 drive cycles that almost had to be extremely precise. My local Porsche dealer said a similar thing. I was told that a dyno might be the answer? I have a trickle charger and it is in use, the mistake made was this red switch in the front bay that apparently cuts off all power even when the charger is connected. I had this switch turned off and the information was erased. Thank you for the imput =)
