HELP! Clouds of white smoke.....
 

I have an 89 911 5 speed with all of 86000 kms. I've had it parked for 4 months. Last week it started fine, drove it around for about 5 minutes. I just changed the oil, put in synthetic, drove it for two blocksand clouds of white smoke came out and the engine started missing. The oil is fine though. Any thoughts?

What weight oil did you put in? What weight oil was in it previously? Did you just change to synthetic, or have you been running that for some time?

I take it the smoke is for sure coming out the exhaust pipe, and not burning up on the engine somewhere for spillage?

I put in 5w30 mobil 1 synthetic. I'm not sure of the weight before because i had it serviced, but it was synthetic. The only thing i can think of is the filter i put in is a fram compared to the mahle that i took out. I bought a mahle today and am going to install it tomorrow hopefully with good results.

Just a question: What procedure (steps) did you use for the oil change? How many quarts of oil, etc. IE, is this your first time doing the oil change, etc. I don't know your skill level, so just trying to check all the bases.

Mahle is the only filter I recommend.

I've been doing this stuff for a long time on all sorts of cars, but this one is throwing me off. I emptied the oil from the plug below and put in about 8 or 9 liters. The mahle filter didn't seem to do the trick although i'm reluctant to run it for more than about 15 seconds with all of the white smoke.

I have a hard time believing the head gasket is the problem. Any thoughts?

Ok, there are 2 plugs you need to drain on a 911. One in the reservoir tank, and one on the case. Then replace the filter. Add 8.5 quarts of oil, start the car and let it idle to operating temperature (it must be at operating temp). Then checking the dipstick, fill until the level comes up. Typically it takes 9.5-10 quarts of oil.

I don't know where you live, but 5w-30 is a bit thin in these engines. If you are running sythetic, a 15w-50 would be a better weight. Dino oil, then 20w-50.

I think you overfilled the oil because you didn't drain the case.
