Major Differences in the '80s

I don't own a Porsche yet, anyway. Looking at the 911's in the '80s vintage. Can you guys help me with what to look for and what to watch out for. Are there better models within the 80's, ie. '84 is the best etc?

Any and all comments welcome.

I am not familiar with the various models available. I have seen a couple nice looking Carrera's in the area for sale. So I am starting with that model in mind. However, not locked into that model in particular.

RE: Major Differences in the '80s

FYI, I have a 1985 911 which has the 915 transmission. I have driven it from 17K miles until now at 171K.

The 915 tranny is not very reliable and has been the MAJOR expense item on the car. Soft brass synchro's is one issue. My clutch was stamped 1986 so Porsche much have replaced it since it was a company car. I thought they changed to the G-60 in 1986 but maybe it was 1987.

Also, don't run synthetic oil in the 915, the syncho's don't like it. Use SWEPCO 201 (see below.)
