Default need help w/ cabr top

Hey all, I'm new to the forum (obviously, or I wouldn't be asking such a newbie question). Anyway, I can't figure out how to get the top down on my '89 911 carrera 3.2. I've followed the instructions in the owners manual but it doesn't seem to be working. Can someone provide me with some idiot proof instructions on how to get the top down, or how to figure out if the motor is broken? Thanks to anyone who can help!

I have a 91 c4, and here's how my top works: put key in ignition, put car in neutral, turn key to ignition spot 2 (do not start the car). raise/lower top with toggle switch under instrument cluster.
Not sure your model year will work the same, but I suspect Porsche designed in similar precautions.

Not the exact same model but works the same way I think. Yeah I've been doing that I think, but it doesn't seem to work.. guess I'll need to take it to the shop to have it checked out. Thanks for the help though.
