Default 1984-1989 911 Carrera

Someday I'd love to find a nice 1984-1989 911 Carrera to love a bit, make it nice. They seem to be selling for under $15,000 now. Anyone have one? Pictures? Also, I'd like to read up on them more, could anyone suggest books, websites, etc with more dirt on these beautiful machines?

Some I found:

Thanks,
Nate

Nate,

I think a really nice car in that year range will still go beyond $15000, but I guess you might find one... Put aside some money for unexpected repairs. I think the old saying "every Porsche is at least a $20,000 car" is on the mark.

I think these are some of the best cars Porsche ever built. The build quality is outstanding, the G50 (87-89)a delight to drive, partsavailable, maintenance easy, however they do havesome probelms(i.e. valve guides, head studs, etc.) That's why a good PPI is importantwhen buying one. Remember you are buying a 20+ year old car.

A book everyone seems to recommend is the Used 911 Story, by Peter Zimmerman.. Ihave not read the book, so I'm just going by what I've heard. There are many written, so I'm sure you'll find plenty to fill your time.

Two of the forums I would recommend along with this, arePelican and Rennlist, both will provide you with alot of information on the 911.. There are others, but these two seem really informative for theCarreras and SC's .

Good Luck,I hope I have provided you with some info, I sure you'll get alot more input.

Bob

True. I'd be expecting a fixer upper.

Thanks for the input... this is definitely something for a few years down the road for me!

Nate--keep searching cars.com and autotrader.com. I've seen some good deals. Now is a good time to buy one of these cars, but you'll see the prices go up a bit when it starts to warm up. Make sure you do a carfax check and a pre puchase inspection. When I was looking for my car there were several with only "minor accidents", leaks, etc. Its all a matter of what you're willing to invest in fixing the car. Keep in mind that most parts for Porsche's are more expensive than other cars. Go on the Porsche Club of America website. They have a great network and a bunch of great folks. Like Bob said, the Porsche 911 Story is a great book. Good luck and let us know what you find.

When I searched for the "Used 911 Story" and Porsche 911 Story," I found that they both exist. Is one of them better than the other?

Not as related... also found this, looks nice:

I'd love to let you know what I find, but now is not the time for me. This is early research. I'm young (twenties); I make more than most people my age but I've got a new family and a few school loans yet. It'll be a while... dreaming and planning.

Thanks much.

Nate--I got the Porsche 911 Story by Paul Frere that goes up until the 2003 model year (996). I believe he has a later edition that covers the 997. Its a great book.

It's great that you have this dream. I didn't get my first 1990 911 Targa until I was 35. It was 6 years old at the time and I paid $25K. I sold it after 5 years and then I just got my second 02 Targa last year. I missed not having my Porsche. Hang in there!

Nate,

I suggested the Used 911 Story, by Peter Zimmerman, as it's my understanding its a geared towards the prospective buyer, detailing what to look for, strong and weak points in the 911.. Again I have never read the book myself, I'm suggesting it because it's getting rave reviews on Rennslist, where Peter is a regular. Hope this helps...
