Problems with adjusting clutch on 85 911 Carrera
 

My clutch was due for some adjustment at the adjusting lever so I crawled under and decided that I should just go ahead and take off the adjusting lever and release lever to give them a good cleaning. Upon reinstalling and several attempts at setting the cable up, I discovered that the clutch pedal wasn't going to come up off the floor more than halfway. It appears that my cable is a inch to inch and a half longer than it should be now! I'm hoping someone can give me some insight to where the problem lies. The release lever with auxiliary spring appear to be installed correctly. It all seems like a basic setup that should not be giving me this kind of challenge. I'm starting to remove interior to gain access to foot pedals to see if something (spring) came loose. I can pull the pedal up and push down and can see that the cable extends and contracts properly. When attempting to adjust the cable tighter with the 15 mm nut it is going too far. The release lever lies tight against the adjusting lever even with the adjusting bolt totally unscrewed and there should be some space (1mm). Clutch was working well recently until it started grinding of late when selecting first or reverse. Sorry If I am rambling, not easy typing all this on phone. Any help would sure be appreciated.
