pumping breaks on 1996 993
 

When I first apply my brakes, the break pedal goes down almost to the floor board. The car does slow but if I pump my breaks a few times the brakes "firm" and the pedal no longer goes to the floor. I can then brake normally for a few seconds. After 20 seconds or so, I need to pump the breaks again to firm them up. Does anyone know what the issue might be? Thanks in advance.

I have the opposite problem. After using the brake couple times, the brake stays down half way. I need to use my foot to pull the pedal back up. Otherwise, the car drives fine and the brake fluid is full. Anyone has any idea what kind of problems I have? Can I fix this myself or do I need a mechanic to do this. If so, how much? Any info. will be very much appreciated!!! Thanks.

Sounds like you simply have air in the system. You need to bleed the brake. Easy to do if your mechanically inclined or a snap for a shop. I would not drive it to much as is. they could go completely.

Depends on the year of your car but most cars have a spring that returns the pedal. Yours maybe weak, unhooked or out of position.
Look under the dash near the top of the pedal.
