Is a Porsche 914 (circa 1973) a decent car?

My dad bought a 914 years ago and has been restoring it plus rebuilding and beefing up the engine (I think he said it has 130 hp right now (I think the original had like 80 hp)) with a curb weight of just over a ton). A friend of mine who doesn't like old cars and only cares about new ones said it was a "poor man's Porsche" and pretty much a piece of sh*t. He has a VW R32 he's always bragging about, and while it may be faster than my dad's, it's also 1,000-1,500 lbs heavier. I don't really care if my dad's car can beat my friends, but I want to know if my dad's car is really that bad MB STAR C4, or if my friend is simply prejudiced.

I haven't driven either car (yet)...I think (hope!) my dad's is a standard shift (I can't remember). My friend's R32 is an automatic since he's a paraplegic, but to me, an automatic shift pretty much takes the fun out of driving no matter how powerful the car is.
